Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017) Movie Review

Directed by Luc Besson, this movie is a visual
spectacle. Throughout the film, the audience is presented with an incredible
amount of interesting concepts and an even bigger array of different types of
alien species. The computer generated environments are breathtaking in terms of
complexity and singularity. Alpha, the space station, is one of the most
attractive and exotic locations seen on film, populated by over 200 distinct species;
each and every one of them had its function and purpose on the society.
Luc wanted to bring Valerian into the big screen for quite some time now. He repeatedly stated during interviews that he was a big fan of the source material and he felt that it was the right moment for this larger than life universe to receive the seventh art treatment. The movie is infused with mind boggling imagery and is in constant progress. It moves at a really fast pace, making it a fun ride. However, plot wise, the narrative is thin. You can figure out some stuff making Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets a predictable movie, albeit only at times.
The characters are not given much backstory, but the main duo is fine. Dane DeHaan plays Valerian convincingly and Cara Delevingne delivers with Laureline. The pair played intergalactic special agents, bouncing between action sequence and humor attempts. Rhianna has essentially a glorified cameo. She basically plays a shape-shifting alien, keen on putting on a show (you’ll know it when you see it).
At its core, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is a vibrant, splashy space adventure, honoring the likes of Star Wars and Avatar. There is a lot of fun to be had with this science fiction blockbuster, despite the lacking of a solid story. With the box office results appearing to be negative, I can see Valerian becoming a cult film for a niche audience, later down the line.

Your review is spot on, I thought it could have had 30 minutes cut to make it slicker, the whole Rihana cameo wasn't really needed. It was visually stunning. I really liked Cara's acting/character but felt Dane was a bit wooden.
